Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone of 237 amino acids — an alpha-subunit shared with LH, FSH and TSH joined to a unique beta-subunit that defines its biology. Acting through the LH/hCG receptor, it is the classical stimulator of gonadal steroidogenesis and one of the most extensively characterised hormones in endocrinology.

Research spans reproductive endocrinology, from stimulation of testicular testosterone production to ovulation induction and corpus-luteum support, alongside assay development and receptor pharmacology. RESEARCH BACKGROUND

A cornerstone hormone of reproductive endocrinology

In the 2005 study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, low-dose hCG maintained intratesticular testosterone in normal men whose own gonadotropins were experimentally suppressed. Local testosterone production was preserved dose-dependently even while circulating LH remained undetectable.

The finding underpins the wider research use of hCG as an LH-receptor agonist — from ovulation triggering in assisted reproduction to corpus-luteum physiology — and comparative receptor pharmacology of LH and hCG. Few research hormones have a longer or better documented literature.
